Hi everyone,
I am a college student in North Carolina doing a research paper for my world religions class on post 9/11 Islam in America. I am hoping to interview Muslims in a few very specific situations:
*A Muslim living in America before 9/11
*A Muslim living near the Murfreesboro or New York mosque
*A Muslim living in the triangle area (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill NC)
*A Muslim living in the Middle East
I would love to hear from Muslims outside of these categories as well. I believe any input could only serve to better my paper. Below is the proposal I have submitted to my professor for the paper and the questions. Any feedback or responses are greatly appreciated (even if only to say I won't get a response on this board!).
Interview proposal: Post 9/11 Islam in America
First, there was the Salem witch trials, next came the red scare, and today, we have Islam. In the wake of the attacks on September 11th a new witch-hunt has emerged. Religious extremists have, in one act, created a stereotype for an entire religion. Two wars have come to be fought as a result of the events at the Twin Towers, both in Islamic countries. These events have created a fervent hatred of Muslims in America by many. Today, a majority of non-Islamic Americans seem to believe that Islam itself is not only to blame but also inherently evil. Nine years after September 11th 2001, mosques in Murfreesboro Tennessee are now hiring security guards after gunshots and a suspected arson. Citizens of the nation are entrenched in debate over a proposed mosque near ground zero. This research paper will look into the American post 9/11 anti-Islam climate. I hope to use the Internet to find multiple subjects for this paper, including at least two of the following:
*A Muslim living in America before 9/11
*A Muslim living near the Murfreesboro or New York mosque
*A Muslim living in the triangle area
*A Muslim living in the Middle East
I believe there must be multiple perspectives to fully understand the effects of the current feelings towards Islam in America. For this reason I may need to conduct all but one through text and possibly email where a natural dialogue cannot be had. A Muslim living in the triangle area, however, is included in my list to satisfy the need for dialogue.
A Muslim living in America before 9/11
1. Can you give a brief overview of Islam and what it means to you?
2. What was it like to be a Muslim in America before 9/11? How did the typical American interact with you?
3. What is it like to be a Muslim in America today?
4. What do you wish America understood about your faith?
A Muslim living near the Murfreesboro or New York mosque
1. Can you give a brief overview of Islam and what it means to you?
2. What is it like to be a Muslim in America today?
3. How have the recent controversies over the proposed mosque effected you?
4. What do you wish America understood about your faith?
